Spring 2019 Previews

I've still got a few shows left to finish in this season, but it's about that time. Let's take a look at some upcoming shows. As always, summary is at the bottom.

Diamond no Ace to Hora, Mimi ga Mieteru yo
  • Kono Yo no Hate de Koi wo Utau Shoujo YU-NO - Give me a break with the VN adaptations, guys. A sci-fi angle and the promise of parallel worlds? I'm just so intrigued, even if VN adaptations tend to burn me.

Other than that, this section is mostly sequels to shows I haven't watched, so there's not much more to say.

Fruits Basket to Kiratto Pri-chan
  • Fruits Basket: 1st Season - From what I gather, this is a remake of a classic shoujo story. I've heard the name thrown around a lot, so I might check it out just to see what the fuss is about.
  • Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu - Admittedly, this is a series I was looking forward to seeing, having read the manga. The author is the same person who wrote Mitsuboshi Colors, so that might give you an idea of what to expect. It's a cute series about making friends. I think one of the quirks of the series is that the characters are ironically named.
  • Kimetsu no Yaiba - Well, I suppose I always need at least one historical series to round out the list. I think the idea of having the main character travel with his transformed sister could be interesting, as long as it's not too gruesome. I'm curious enough to check it out.
  • Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai - This is another series where I've read the manga and enjoyed it. It's more of a typical romcom setting, with the quirk being that the heroines all wish to pursue professions that don't match up with their talents. I think it's an interesting concept, though, with the basic theme of following your dreams rather than just doing what you're good at.
  • Kono Oto Tomare - I know nothing about this series, but I don't mind watching music-related shows. From my brief research, I've seen some people draw parallels to Chihayafuru, which might be cool if that's true.
Gunjou no Magmel to King of Prism
  • Gunjou no Magmel - There's not too much to go on here, but the premise sounds like something that might appeal to me. I might try it out, but I don't know how I feel about the "shounen superpower" combination.
  • Shoumetsu Toshi - I know I shouldn't jump head-first into the video game adaptation, but it's just so tempting. The mystery aspect seems like it could actually deliver in some way, and I like the idea of searching for a lost city.
  • Fairy Gone - This sounds pretty gritty for a P.A. Works series, so I guess I'm in. I do think the idea of modified soldiers integrating into a peaceful society sounds promising. It sounds a lot like Violet Evergarden, doesn't it?
  • Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin - This series sounds fairly intriguing for a supernatural-focused setting. This idea of being able to understand non-human speech seems like a strange and mundane power, but I think I'd be willing to see what the series does with it.
  • RobiHachi - The setup seems hilariously convoluted, but I think I'm on board to watch some friendly space adventures.
Mahou no Lumitear to Cardfight Vanguard
  • One Punch Man S2 - I know I'm going to catch flak for this, but do I have to?
  • Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san - Yeah, I'm not sure about this one either. I guess it could be cute?
  • Kenja no Mago - Oh hey, there's actually an isekai series in this season (that's not a leftover from the previous season). Sure, why not?
  • Carole & Tuesday - This idea of a world where all media is computer-generated is fairly fascinating. I'm quite curious to see what kind of twist the series puts on that idea.
  • Sarazanmai - The whole "transform into kappa" angle seems a bit much, but I always like a good folk-style story. I might try it out.
  • Bungou Stray Dogs S3 - It's been a while since the second season, but I'm actually looking forward to this season. I don't think I was anticipating the second season quite as much, so we'll see how it goes.
  • Shingeki no Kyojin S3 Part 2 - I'm still on the fence for this season. I was trying to phase it out in the last season, so I might do more of the same. The manga gets really weird, after all...
Short anime

Notable shorts

  • Senryuu Shoujo - This series is mostly cute fluff, and I have no problem with that.
  • Joshi Kausei - I'm actually quite curious to see how this series gets translated into an anime. As a manga, its main gimmick was a general lack of dialogue, but you can convey a lot more when you introduce sound into the picture. I wonder whether that will contribute or detract from the original charm.
  • Isekai Quartet - What could go wrong?

Summary

General thoughts – It seems like there's a decent amount of sci-fi in this season, which seems cool. With the exception of a couple of manga adaptations, I feel like I'm largely blind on the non-sequel shows for the season. Time to see how wrong I can be, huh? Also, I'll probably be continuing with Dororo from the winter season, since it's been a fairly solid series so far.

Potentially covering - Kimetsu no Yaiba, Fairy Gone, Carole & Tuesday, Bungou Stray Dogs S3

Definitely watching - Kono Yo no Hate de Koi wo Utau Shoujo YU-NO, Fruits Basket: 1st Season, Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu, Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai, Shoumetsu Toshi, Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin, RobiHachi, Kenja no Mago

Maybe watching - Kono Oto Tomare, Gunjou no Magmel, Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san, Sarazanmai
