Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai First Impressions (1-2): Life in the sky

The mysterious client appears

If fighter jets aren't your thing, this alternative series about girls flying around in planes and shooting down bad guys is probably a bit more old school. It feels strange to introduce this series, since it hasn't done too much to introduce itself. What we know so far is that the series centers around the Kotobuki Squad, a team of talented female pilots who act as bodyguards for hire.

Chika rejoins the cast

This series certainly has a colorful cast of characters. It's still too early to tell, but what we've seen of the girls at this point seems entertaining. I think it's kind of funny that the episode excludes a character from the first episode. I'm guessing this is done because her relationship with Chika can be distracting for an episode meant to introduce the series.

Chika rejoins the cast

The second episode focuses on the rivalry between the main(-ish) character, Kyrie, and Chika, who was missing in the first episode. It seemed a little bit odd to me that they worked it out so quickly, but watching the two bicker was very entertaining.

Quick tempers get you shot down

The art style in this series has a very noticeable 3D effect to it, but I haven't found it particularly distracting. The air combat itself is incredibly entertaining to watch, especially when compared to the other air combat series of the season. I say this knowing full well that I know nothing about air combat, but it's the feeling I get when I'm watching.

Hayabusas have trouble seeing behind

I'm a little curious about the use of disposable mob characters in this series. In the first two episodes, we're introduced to two separate groups of pilots who seem to exist only to get killed off by the enemy forces. This gives the girls room to rush in and save the day. Is that how these battles are going to go?

They're such good friends

My main worry with this series so far is that it hasn't given us a sense of direction. There are hints at a revenge plot centering around Kyrie, but the series doesn't seem to have committed to it yet. Honestly, I might just be okay with watching the girls fly around and take jobs, but I'd like to know that it's what I'm getting myself into.
