Planet With Episode 8: Finding a hero

This series continues to be really enjoyable to watch. This week's episode did a good job of building Nozomi and Hideo as characters while giving Benika a very reasonable explanation for joining the Sealing Faction. Souya is also great in this episode. He comes off as a whiny brat for refusing to fight, but he has a strong emotional reason that everyone surprisingly respects.

Are there even bad guys in this series? Shiraishi should be an antagonist, but she's still great.

Benika's past as a cop who lost her partner to a mentally unstable kid with a gun makes a lot of sense. I'm sure this gets into weird gun control controversy, but it's not unreasonable for someone with that past to want to keep dangerous weapons, in the form of psychic powers, out of the hands of everyone.

Okay, this scene was just funny. That is all.

This scene is a great reminder of everything Souya has lost. Not only does he break down about it, he makes it completely personal by naming the friends and family he can never see again. In any other series, I'd call him a nuisance, but this scene is handled really well.

Hideo's been great as the typical "good guy" character. I totally expected him to try and force Souya into the fight with some speech about obligation, but he just takes matters into his own hands. That being said, Hideo definitely comes off as a potentially tragic character. He seems like the kind of mentor that might need to die to motivate Souya. Plus, he definitely looked like he was in pain after fighting Benika.

Once again, I definitely expected this revelation that the dragon was still alive to be enough to bring Souya back, but he seems to be impervious to the bait. I'm looking forward to seeing what ends up changing his mind.

Do you think that Nozomi will step up and pilot Sensei?

Or do you think Souya will change his mind?

I think it's great that the characters are so complex and well-drawn that we can talk about it but not really know for sure!
