Muhyo to Rouji no Mahouritsu Soudan Jimusho First Impressions (1): Magical law blasts

This show came a bit late in the game, but it was one of the shows that caught my interest. I thought the idea of hunting down rogue spirits could be cool, but this first episode didn't really appeal to me. I don't mind episodic series, but the story of this episode didn't have a really clear message. The episode had some cool visual effects, but the concept of the magic laws seemed a lot more simplistic than I was hoping it would be.

I'm guessing the simple examples of magical laws are used in this episode because it's meant to be an introduction. I'm hoping there's more to laws in later episodes. From what I saw in this episode, it seemed like the laws just prohibit spirits from messing with humans.

This seems like a common story.

Rie's story could have been more interesting if they pushed things back on Rie more. You could make the argument that she was only friends with Taeko for convenience, so I'd argue that Taeko was right to be upset with her. Sure, Taeko seems especially clingy, she's somewhat justified.

I was honestly hoping for some kind of twist when the monster was revealed, but it turned out to be pretty straightforward. I think it would have been cool if Rie's guilt was actually what created the monster, since having Taeko return for revenge seems pretty cut and dry.

Muhyo's rigid adherence to the law could have been an interesting source of tension in the series, but he compromises himself pretty quickly.

In the end, both Rie and Taeko get a kind of happy ending, but Rie doesn't really seem deserving of that. The story seemed to move too quickly to give her a proper redemption.
