Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau Episode 8: Plot armor is nice

This series continues to be a difficult one to judge because I feel like there's a decent amount of stuff that I like to see, but they're paired with some really weird stuff. To give a quick example, I was less annoyed with Neri's singing in this episode because it felt like there was an actual purpose to it. The creepy hands she was spawning seemed to support the people left on the Mud Whale. But why did it need to happen last week?

I really wasn't sure what to make of Liodari in this episode. It seemeed like he was supposed to be pitied based on how he was portrayed, but I don't think there was enough information given to really accomplish that. We're given a vague sense that his past made him what he was, but I would have liked to see more on why he saw everyone as fake. I can understand why he might see the emotionless soldiers as fake, but he pushes it on the Mud Whale people too.

This captain guy is probably the most frustrating character of this episode. First off, he intentionally shoots Ouni in the leg, but immediately orders his soldiers to kill Ouni. Why didn't you just do that when you had the chance? Then, he stops everyone from carrying out his order so he can gloat over Ouni before trying to kill him again.

I thought the comment about the false paradise is kinda interesting, though. I wonder if it's supposed to be referencing some kind of idea that emotions inhibit technological advance or something. I don't really think that's the case in reality, but that was what I got from the scene.
