ACCA - 13-ku Kansatsu-ka First Impressions (1): So now what?

I'm having a hard time with this series. On the one hand, nothing particular in the show is a turn-off for me. I don't find myself hating this first episode. But much like our main character Jean Otus, I'm having trouble getting too excited just yet. There does seem to be some suggestion of darker themes in the show, but the first episode seems almost like setup, rather than an attempt to grab attention. Maybe that's a good thing. Maybe it's not. Not sure yet.

The opening song in this series is pretty a solid beat. The only part that didn't work for me is the random autotune vocals, but those go away after a while. The ending song isn't bad, but it didn't feel particularly special for me. Sounded almost...empty.

Is it normal in Japan to display headlines in Romanized letters?

Cigarettes are a luxury? Is this set in the past?

Couple of questions about this map past the obvious fact that the country is shaped like a bird. Why is each province/state name on there twice, one in big bold letters and the other in smaller letters? Why are the seas just called "Sea"? I need to know these things.

The last scene convinced me that the dissolution of the Inspection Department was fairly reasonable, but this clandestine meeting of five makes me really question that conclusion.

These guys are really into their corn, huh?

Is that what this show is going to be? Minor corruption cases? I mean, I can probably get on board with that, but I really don't know what I'm supposed to be expecting.

They sure shrugged off the whole "our department is getting shut down" thing pretty quickly.

So...he's being forced to do a big run of the districts? What exactly does that mean?

How is this guy able to run into Jean so much?

Apparently, she's really important. But why exactly are two auditors being sent at the same time?

Does this guy really think he's the reason the other guy changed his mind? He must be new...

Are we ever going to find out why this guy seems to have a problem with Jean? I mean...he's clearly planning something.
