Bungou Stray Dogs Episode 20: White whale!

At this point, we have to be done with the super pitiful Atsushi, right? I think it's about time Atsushi got a decent episode...he's my major complaint with the series and I think this one helps. Dazai's role in the episode is a bit questionable, but the extra authors introduced in this episode make me glad the Guild exists. At least they make me feel like I actually know literature...

Anyway, next week we get some large-scale ability user battles? I hope the entire episode isn't spent doing some random negotiations or something.

I mean...this is a decent change for Kyouka, but I'm not a fan of the "well, I was just roaming around this whole time" explanation for where she's been.

Another author I know! Also, is the sniper rifle supposed to be an "I'm your Huckleberry" reference or is there some other literary significance? Because I definitely would be the one to miss it. I suppose it could just be a play on Mark Twain's name with "mark" being the target.

Herman? Please be a giant whale. Please be a giant whale. Please be a giant whale.

YES!

Really? She's not dead? Come on...

I really don't know what to make of this scene. Dazai makes the biggest deal about Q as an enemy JUST LAST WEEK and now this? I guess Q wasn't such a big deal after all.

Okay, I guess Q's ability is insane but that doesn't make the user clever or anything. I suppose Dazai was just reacting to the cruelty of the power or something...I take back what I said before.

The fact that they're making Fitzgerald out to be so clearly messed up makes me wonder if we should be expecting an epic Port Mafia and Armed Detective Agency team up real soon.

Burn victim buddies!

Well, I guess this counts as an orphanage flashback?

Please tell me this means Atsushi will stop being useless. Also, the tiger's probably going to be ridiculous enough of a power to save him from falling damage.

Ahhh there's the real one.

Of course he's here.

The whale? Why? Why did they need the giant whale? Was the show not already strange enough? And how is that a power? It's a vehicle.
Okay, I will let this go eventually.
My question now is why does Atsushi have some scar from some childhood burning when we've established he pretty much heals from everything? That didn't bother me when I saw the scene but reading through your comments here it kind of occurred to me that shouldn't that damage have healed?
    As always, thanks for sharing.

    don't question the whale!

that's a good point...im gonna go with "because plot demands it"

The plot definitely demanded it but that didn't make it make sense (even by this show's standard of sense).

I am going to stop questioning the whale. Right after the season ends and I write a small rant in the middle of an otherwise fairly sane review of this series.

i would try to make some excuse about atsushi's power not working yet, but why would the orphanage abuse him if his power hadnt manifested? yeah...there's no great answer.

    whale-sama will not be pleased!

Orphanages routinely abuse kids trope maybe? That's a terrible explanation really but it's about all I've got.
Okay, no more questioning. Just watch and hope Port Mafia guys finally live up to the whole badass thing they had going before we actually saw them in season 1.
