Marth's Manga Adventures: Reading Manga Post-Anime

(You'll have to excuse my laziness today...)

Anyone else have this problem or is it just me? I have a rule. When an anime adaptation is announced for a manga that's on my "to do" list, I won't read it. I've always thought it was awkward to talk about an anime while having the manga perspective because you just have too much information going in...I also don't like falling into a "the manga did this better" trap. However, when the anime ends with the story unfinished (and it almost always does), I'm going to be curious what happens next, but I often have trouble getting past the barrier of the events that I have already watched.

For series like World Trigger, where I wasn't too invested in the early story, I just skipped straight to the part where the anime left off, but I'm constantly afraid I'll miss something. I think the only exception to this has been Space Brothers. Despite my gripes with the filler in the anime, I had a good time watching it, so I didn't mind going through the chapters I had already seen on the big screen. That doesn't mean I didn't fast-forward through parts, but still...I felt like I wasn't missing out (for those that are wondering, you're really not missing out if you just skip the chapters that were adapted into anime...the adaptation felt pretty faithful to me). So that brings me back to my first question: anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

Nope, it's not just you. I've done that with quite a lot of series, luckily a few have ended up getting sequels but there are some I'd still like to know what happens next, but I can't seem to get far with the manga. And I know you don't read light novels, but I'm pretty much the same with those too. I don't like skipping the anime content though; I did that with Rokka and I felt like I needed to go back and read the first novel. I plan to do that eventually, but...

shivers imagine all of the psychological pain that i would feel if i read light novels...

i feel like skipping the anime content is a bad idea in most cases...the problem is that re-reading that section to catch the differences can be rough

Lol yeah. Most of them seem to be totally your sort of thing though... :P

Agreed. I usually want to get to new stuff quickly, but by the time I get through all the content I've seen before, the impact of the anime has worn off a bit and just reading the same stuff has been less enjoyable than it should have so I tend to give up. :/

Well I tend to just read the whole thing even if it does mean repeating arcs and events, but tbh I don't really mind... except if the new story only starts 14 volumes in. Then I just skip to the new stuff. It'll take too long.

And I tend to start the manga after the first episode of the anime if I REALLY like it, then I'll read the manga, swearing to myself I won't get to content that the anime hasn't covered (ending in me finishing all the available chapters, facepalming, and then raving about how the manga was infinitely better).

I do have problems in reading light novels/manga after watching anime as the content I've already watched becomes annoying. The solution is generally either wait long enough for me to forget about what happened or simply invert the order and not watch the anime until I've read the novel/manga. :D
