July, 2012:

Tari Tari Episode 5

A very Wakana-focused episode where we find out what the deal is with her mother. While it seems to blames herself a bit for her mother’s death (like most anime characters would), mostly she regrets the way she acted towards her mother who was always trying to keep her cheerful. I’m sure she also feels a little resentment for not being told about her mother’s illness, but it’s probably overpowered by that pure regret. And whatever was in that mystery letter hasn’t seemed to help at all. Like I said last week, it almost seems like it might have worked against her getting over her mother’s death.

Also, when Wakana was with Shiho, she mentioned some national competition that the choir club won while Wakana’s mother was there. I may be grasping at straws here, but maybe that’s the final goal of this show? To get Wakana to join so they can compete in that competition? Someone throw me a bone, here!

Next week looks to be getting pretty serious…is Wakana’s issue coming to a close? It looks like everyone else might be stepping in to help (they were getting suspicious this week, so I guess they finally decide to act). If so, then we can finally have everyone together and stuff…that would be fun.

Rinne no Lagrange Episode 16

Well, I figured Dizelmine wouldn’t take Yurikano to the conference, but I never factored in the possibility that she would go herself. So we get to find out more about her. They confirm that she isn’t a clone, but she isn’t her normal self. Apparently, she has reverted back to a younger form of herself (mentally). She also has no recollection of meeting Madoka, so the spirit idea I had last week is definitely looking good. But I guess we still don’t know why she’s become like this. But I do know this…Muginami is soooooo jealous.

But I guess Muginami, Lan, and Madoka are randomly going to Le Garite? Makes sense. They have to follow Yurikano, after all. I wonder who Madoka is slapping in the preview…the real Yurikano or the ditzy Yurikano? I’m guessing the real one, but you never know. Also, what’s up with this new Ovid that Villagiulio is standing by? It reminded me of a scene from…every Gundam show. What’s so special about this Ovid that makes it important to him?

Hyouka Episode 15

And so the mystery begins. It seems like this time around, the culprit actually seems to be acting somewhat maliciously, since everything is in a pattern. By the way, the pattern of club names and missing items based on Japanese alphabets…I never would have guessed that. It’s a little depressing…I never stood a chance. Oh well, it was fun speculating about it.

But the question remains: why? What reason would someone have to be going around and stealing things in this order? I suppose Houtarou’s sister did warn him that something would happen during the festival, but it seems to be too much of a stretch to think she did it.

Personally, I think the most interesting outcome would be if the culprit were challenging either the school or even the Classics Club specifically. You know…something like “I’ve shown you the pattern, so try and stop me.” That’s usually the reason people use a pattern. I sure hope they don’t try to pull some “the items were missing the whole time” stuff…that kinda thing is a bit boring.

Next week, the mystery continues. I wonder what will happen. Will the Classics Club be the next target? Logically, it would make sense that they are…but it’s not like Houtarou will leave the room, so how could they pull it off? And will Houtarou make another incorrect deduction that he has to correct again or is Satoshi right that he must catch the culprit in the act?

Space Brothers Episode 18

The third exam is finally reaching a close. Funny how the green cards have become practically nothing in Team A (they’re still screwing with Team B, though). It’s a very Kenji-focused episode as he continues to struggle to unify Team B. Though Mizoguchi isn’t making it easy. Judging by what has happened before, his request that Kenji drop from the selection is a loaded one.

Even if Kenji agreed, he could still twist it by saying Kenji is purposely trying to sacrifice himself to look good to JAXA. But I guess with his daughter’s help, Kenji has regained his composure and determination. Will next week be the end of the exam? How long has this exam been going? Feels like forever.

Kokoro Connect Episode 4

Well, I wasn’t expecting Iori’s problem to come out so quickly. Did I call re-marrying or what? So good. Also, Inaba’s problems were solved. Go figure. I suppose I understand Iori’s identity problems…I’ve always envied those people who just knew what they wanted and what would make them happy. Either they’re deluding themselves or they really know…both situations get my envy (ignorance is bliss, after all). It’s true that I still don’t know what I want to do, but I would say it doesn’t bother me as much as it used to.

I’ve always had a tendency to develop multiple personas myself throughout the various communities I’ve joined (whether online or real life). But I wouldn’t say that they contribute in any way to an identity crisis. If anything, they probably help me because I can look for the places where they all converge and question whether those are part of my true personality.

As for Inaba’s trust issues, I was surprised that there would be someone who was so deeply affected by the idea that the others could do some evil stuff in each other’s bodies. I guess I just would expect an anime to have everyone choose not to worry about that sort of thing by default. I mean, of course, they’d worry about the others doing perverted things, but committing crimes?

Anyways, next week looks to be pretty eventful. That looked like maybe a confession from Aoki to Yui? And I noted an appearance of Heartseed again. And of course, there’s the scene from the PV everyone’s been talking about, Iori on the bridge. It almost looks like it might be Taichi’s fault…

Accel World Episode 16

Remember, Haru…there is no spoon. You’ve had the ability to fly this whole time…you just need to believe. Sound about right? Well, I suppose it would have been depressing if it had taken too long for Haru to figure out this incarnation business…still, the training itself isn’t anything surprising. Why else would they have such a ridiculously tall tower? As for Sky Raker herself, I’m not sure if I see her returning as a permanent member of the cast…maybe she just shows up in the final battle to lend a hand…you know.

I will say this, though. This episode does point out something interesting about games. As we move closer and closer to creating games that can emulate reality, it’s very possible to lose sight of the fact that it’s all a program. Haru instinctively thought of the Accelerated World as having the same limitations as reality, but actually, the “reality” it shows is only an interface created for the user. So when the robot overmind takes over in the future, try to break the wall…okay?

Well, hopefully we see the results of this week’s training next week. The preview shows Haru, Taku, and Chiyu in a battle against Noumi for some reason. It also shows Kuroyukihime sending Haru something from her trip, but let’s not go into that.

Sword Art Online Episode 4

Well, I suppose not everyone can get a name as intimidating as “Terror of Death.” Black Swordsman sounds pretty bland in comparison. Then again, if Kirito was like Haseo, then we’d probably have some problems because Haseo’s not the most fun character in the world. At least Kirito is still a nice guy (despite all the crap that happens to him…see episode 3). But yeah…we see more of Kirito’s journeys as a legendary solo player before he ends up getting roped by Asuna (you know it’s gonna happen).

So is Silica supposed to be a recurring character in this show after all of this introductory stuff is done? Because I think she was in character art before the show was released…but she’s shown at about the same time as Sachi in the opening. Healing dragon is always nice to have, after all. Also, I’m surprised that Sword Art Online actually has a system that reveals player killers and such.

What surprised me even more was that there are people who believe that you don’t truly die in the real world if you die in the game. I suppose you could think of it similarly to the idea of the afterlife. Someone has implanted this idea that dying in the game will mean true death, but there is no real way to prove it unless you actually die. Of course in this situation, the answer to the question “why not kill yourself if you think that it won’t kill you for real?” is answered with a simple “I find the game fun and I want to play as long as possible before dying and never getting to come back.”

Anyway, hopefully next week, the actual story starts. But then again, not all characters in the opening have been shown yet, so it’s possible there’s still more background story to be shown.

Natsuyuki Rendezvous Episode 4

Huh…Hazuki’s so depressed that he just lets Atsushi in with no problem. It certainly raises a lot of questions…the most important of which being: how did Atsushi know he could enter Hazuki’s body and how did he know how to do it? He had to go through all that glowing and jazz…I highly doubt it’s an intuitive process. I’ll never understand ghosts…

And what happens now that he’s in? Will he tell Rokka that it’s actually him or just pretend to be Hazuki and temporarily enjoying being alive again? If he tells her, then that’s probably the most awkward love triangle ever. I can almost see the scenes with Rokka being angry at Hazuki and yelling at him to let Atsushi out instead.

Campione Episode 4

Arianna’s definitely got her priorities straight.

Well…that sword isn’t quite as overpowered as I expected. Apparently, it has an energy supply. It was kinda interesting the way they sorta re-wrote mythology in that battle…saying that while Greek mythology states that Athena was the daughter of Zeus, in actuality, she was an ancient queen that was overthrown by Zeus. I mean…it’s not like we could say which is correct. I doubt we even have enough information to deny that the Greeks actually originally believed this. It’s something fun to think about while you’re watching them fight.

Bows are so awesome…

Anyway character-wise, stuff is pretty straightforward. Athena was spared, so she can come back and aid them later. Mariya called for Godou in a desperate moment and he came to her side, so she’s basically in. As for Liliana, she seems to be the most infatuated with Godou in the opening, so I wonder what he does to make this happen. Finally, Erica continues to make me uneasy with her crazy manipulations…what’s she up to? First enemy as a Campione is defeated…wonder what’s next. The title of next week’s episode almost makes it look like normal life girl problems for Godou.

Life’s Great Mysteries: Marth on Souls

While I choose not to believe in the existence of the soul, I can’t say I haven’t found it an interesting concept to ponder in my free time. Since this is potentially a touchy subject, I will start by saying that similarly to my time travel post, this is just my personal idea that may be right or wrong. I really don’t know. It’s simply what I have rationalized in my own head. I’m throwing out a theory, so if I see something like “You’re a bastard for insulting the beliefs of others”, I’ll be very upset because that’s very much not what I’m doing.

So what’s the plan? First, let me state that I believe that the existence of the soul is impossible to confirm or deny because the very concept of the soul requires that there is no physical evidence of its existence. I believe that the soul is meant to immune to the influences of the physical world, and thus the physical world shouldn’t be able to detect it. It acts as an anchor in a world where memories can be lost, bodies can become comatose, and personalities can change with the passing of time. Essentially, the soul remains constant through all of this. With that said, the rest of the plan is to explain this definition a bit and then I’ll go into the implications of this.

you look confused…

While there are varying interpretations of the word “soul”, I would say that there are a few common aspects. First, it is immortal. When a soul is “created”, it cannot be destroyed and it will never decay. Second, a soul is intangible. As I mentioned before, it would follow that there is no physical evidence of its existence and that no force that we can perceive should be able to manipulate it. And third, the soul acts as a form of identity…as in each person is tied to a single soul. Note that this is saying that we are unique in life, but not necessarily in death (an example being reincarnation).

Those three properties may seem to be exclusive, but I would say that they all stem from the idea of allowing our existence to continue indefinitely. Why do humans have a concept of a soul? I believe that the soul exists as a sense of security or comfort…an assurance that a person’s identity will last forever (hence the immortal bit). Why is a soul intangible? Because while our minds and bodies can be altered by our environments, something intangible cannot (I’ll explain this in a second). This creates the sense that in a world where minds and bodies are subjected the harsh forces of the environment, part of our identity remains constant. A clear way to say “this is who I am.”

Please note that I’m not saying that a soul and an identity are interchangeable. Let’s take the example of numbers. A number, being intangible, can’t be manipulated in any way through tangible means. We can combine them to create new numbers, but within those new numbers, the number remains (if I add 1 and 2, 1 is technically still a piece of 3). We can change the identity of a number, for example calling the number 1 “four” or something like that. Does this make 1 any different than what it was when we called it “one”? No, it doesn’t. That’s basically how a soul works. It is constant, and therefore humans choose to link their identity to it.

What does this all mean? Let’s look at Kokoro Connect and the idea of “soul swapping.” Normally I would try to say something like “they call it soul swapping, but they’re actually swapping _____”, but I really can’t with this show. The only way I can rationalize it is to say that their souls move to the new body, overriding the conscious mind of the new body. They don’t retain the memories of the new body, so they must be suppressed somehow. Also, they do retain some aspects of the subconscious of the new body (demonstrated with Yui’s androphobia), which rules out the possibility of simply switching brains. This does bring up some implications of connecting souls with the conscious mind, but that isn’t really my concern (because I’m trying to stay as general as possible).

Well, in the case of Kokoro Connect where the soul is being shifted around, this kind of soul allows the identity to remain constant. If Taichi and Iori swap, then whichever body contains Taichi’s soul is Taichi and whichever body contains Iori’s soul is Iori. This sort of distinction isn’t quite as clear in science. If we look at Aoki and Yui’s swap, what is the identity of Yui’s body? Aoki is technically the one in control, but it’s demonstrated that Yui’s mind still has some level of influence. There’s no part of Aoki’s brain transmitting androphobia, so it must be some remaining “piece” of Yui’s brain.

With two “half-brains”, which one could we use for identity? Say we copied Aoki’s memories on to Yui’s brain. Would we have then “created” a “new” Aoki that just looks like Yui? You could argue that Aoki’s memories generate identity, but then you could ask if amnesia creates a new person. Can you see how that can be a bit tricky? But I’ll leave the identity stuff up to the philosophers. It isn’t really my point. I’m just saying that this is the reason the soul exists.

So since that may have been confusing, let me make this clear. What you have just read is 1) what I think a soul is, 2) why I think the concept exists, and 3) why I believe it’s pointless to argue for or against its existence.
